Title: The Path of Light
Material: Stainless Steel, UV Wires
Dimensions: 220 x 80 x 80 cm
In close collaboration with optics specialists at Nikon, Oefner created a data sculpture, that visualizes the light passing through a Nikon lens. The work is made up of eight metallic rings, each one accurately representing a lens element, at which light is bent inside the lens. Dozens of electroluminescent wires are lead along the rings, creating an optical path. When exhibited in a black room, all that the viewer can see are the glowing paths of light traveling through space.
Similar to his previous projects, the artist seamlessly connects the world of science and art by using scientific data to define form and composition of his work. What he was most interested in creating „Path of Light“ was to transform abstract, mathematical data into something real and tangible.
