Disintegrating fabricates moments that never occurred. Working with physical objects — automobiles, paintings, human portraits — Fabian Oefner constructs scenes of rupture that appear to document an instant of destruction, yet are assembled piece by piece over extended periods of time.

The works use the authority of photography to make the impossible appear factual. Thousands of fragments are photographed individually, suspended, displaced, and recomposed into images that never existed.
